Women Who Light the Community

I created 5 videos for a Boulder Chamber event called Women Who Light the Community. These amazing women have made incredible contributions to Boulder County and beyond.

Diane Magliolo was nominated “for her work with the Boulder County Addictions Recovery Center and her nearly 30 years of experience in addictions, community corrections and wellness education. Diane served on a planning committee under the direction of Judge Roxanne Bailin to develop and implement the Boulder County Integrated Treatment Court (an intensive intervention court to address the problems of substance abuse which treats the offender as an addict rather than a criminal). Diane continuously works to keep the path to recovery illuminated and to improve the quality of life for addicts and their families.”

Sue Deans “started in Boulder as a cub reporter at the Daily Camera in 1977 and with her talents was soon made an assistant managing editor and city editor. Her work contributed to the Camera later being named one of the country’s best small newspapers by the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Sue was key in obtaining the same honors for The Sun News in Myrtle Beach which was also named one of the best designed newspapers in the world. She returned to the Camera in 2003 as editor and retired in 2007 after a 30-year career in journalism. In her retirement she is busy providing communication assistance to the boards of numerous organizations as well as for the CU-Boulder School of Journalism and Mass Communication.”

JoAnn Joselyn “is the first woman to earn a doctoral degree at CU in astrogeophysics and the first woman elected as the secretary-general of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. In 1972 she was part of the formation of the Boulder-based Share-A-Gift program (now Toys for Tots) and the following year took over its leadership. In 2008 JoAnn helped 1,564 kids have a gift-filled Christmas. She noticed that many of the recipients were from Spanish speaking families and recruited high school Spanish classes to assist in the distribution of gifts.”

Josie Heath received a lifetime achievement award. “As president of The Community Foundation serving Boulder County, total grants and scholarships awarded by the foundation have grown from $17,750 in 1995 to $4,795,108 in 2008. Additionally, she has developed a program at Red Rocks Community College to enable underprivileged women to pursue non-traditional, higher paying careers; helped establish the Women’s Foundation of Colorado; was appointed by President Carter as Denver regional director for ACTION; served as the assistant to the director of the White House Office of National Service; worked with elected officials in emerging democracies in Central and Eastern Europe as a member of Harvard University’s Project Liberty team; was a consultant for the Transatlantic Community Foundations; a member of the international Women’s Forum; has been inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame; was honored by the Colorado Association of Non-Profit Organizations; and has received three presidential appointments.”

Beverly Sears also received a lifetime achievement award. “For 48 years Bev has brought people together through her work, volunteer activities, and friendship. She has contributed her time and efforts to: People’s Clinic, Colorado Music Festival, Audubon Society, Democratic Women, Fortnightly Club, Unitarian Universalist Church, and Special Transit. As an elected member of the Boulder City Council, she participated in decisions around growth control, sustainable economy, and environmental quality. She headed the Model Lease Committee which created today’s Boulder Model Lease. Bev built the funding for the Graduate School and research institutes at CU and generated a multi-million dollar endowment. She did the legwork to initiate collaborative research institutes at CU and build the research campus. Her efforts also brought together the Graduate School Advisory Council and a small grants program now named the Beverly Sears Grants Endowment.”
